iCubeSmart 8x8x8 3D LED Cube in action
This is a 8X8X8 LED Matrix Cube incorporating 512 Single color RGB LEDs for displaying various colors and patterns. This LED Cube was built using iCubeSmart 3D Led Cube Light DIY Kit from Amazon. As you can see in the pictures that there is a lot of bending LED leads at right angles required, thus took couple of days just to create the 8 layers of LED matrix and solder the 512 LEDs. You do have to take time & patience to do it right as it helps. Fixing broken LEDs after assembly is not easy. Most of the other components were relatively easy to setup as the main board was already soldered ready to use from factory. It also acts as a template to solder the 8x8x8 LED matrix.
The unit comes with firmware pre-loaded via the HEX file from factory with default animations that you see in the Video. If you are technically inclined you can also Program the Micro controller IC STC12C5A60S2 using HEX file firmware which BTW can also be modified (if needed) by the animation software (download it from a google shared drive) and using an USB to UART CP210x Bridge included in the Kit. The cube runs on USB 5vDC power. It does need more than 500mAh at times (Depending on the animation) and you may need 5vDC 2Ah power adapter for reliable operation.
Bottom-line: It is after-all an electronic toy, thus very bright and colorful. It does have some glitches once in a while and the cube animation hangs & the included animation could use some TLC but overall a satisfying long project.
Actually, it is much more easier than you think to assemble! - Enjoy the light show!

This must have been therapeutic to build this. Cool project
