This tiny SEAGATE Superspeed 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive was attempted on a Fujitsu Laptop running windows XP. The drive that it replaced was Fujitsu MHW2120BJ 120GB running at 7200RPM. This drive's performance was not stellar by any means but the larger capacity was justifiable for a perfect replacement upgrade.
If you know HDD's and played with it all your life then you know that most 'nearline' drives running at 5400 RPM will be slow no matter what manufacturer claims with 'SSD' or 'Hybrid' labels. This drive however manages to get read/write speeds very close to a lower capacity speedy '7200RPM' SATA drive which alone is worth the upgrade.
Sadly, This drive's SSD part which is mere '8GB' does not really make anything go faster like you would expect from a true fully Solid state disk drive. I wished it was 64GB SSD + 1TB regular spindle for seeing any noticeably faster performance.
Having said, others users of this drive will get slightly better performance when you use the maximum advertised host link speeds of SATA 6Gb/s but in my tested laptop it could only connect half the link speed of SATA 3Gb/s thereby my results are slightly slower. PROS
- Runs super silent (Hardly tell it is spinning)
- 2.5" form factor but large 1TB capacity
- Performs as good as any 7200 RPM drive
CONS
- SSD capacity is too less for any noticeable performance improvements
- Slightly more power consumption (Rated @0.70A +5v (100mA more than normal)
- The retail kit does not really give you anything extra and costs more.
Reliability is something that I have not tested yet. The drive has been running non-stop for 2 days without any hiccups and hopefully stays that way. I will update my review if something catastrophic were to happen.
It is hard to rate this drive with 5 stars as in reality it is about 3 and half stars! to be fair I have rated this with 4 stars. Hope this review proves useful for making decision to purchase HYBRID SSDs here on Amazon. If you have any questions please feel free to comment.
